Richard Branson’s latest addition to the Virgin Limited Edition range is the extraordinary Mahali Mzuri Safari Camp, deep within the Kenyan Motorogi Conservancy. Set to open in August 2014, the phenomenal new safari camp stretches along the breath-taking grasslands of the Maasai Mara from southern Kenya into Tanzania. The tented accommodations that form the Mahali Mzuri camp boast expansive views of the reserve from incredible private balconies. The luxurious retreat consists of just 12 tents in a variety of different sizes, all with access to an infinity pool so you can soak up the sights in style. Branson has stipulated a strict 24 guest maximum for Mahali Mzuri at all times, making your safari holiday all the more exclusive.
A safari holiday is undoubtedly a holiday of a lifetime we can’t stress strongly enough the importance of when you travel. In February and March it’s scorching hot with temperatures of at least 30°C and up, whereas November and June are slightly milder. The most popular time to safari is from July to October for The Great Migration where around a million wildebeest, zebra, gazelles and other game migrate north from the Serengeti into the Maasai Mara. The main rainy seasons in Kenya are from the end of March until the beginning of May. African rain is nothing like the rain that we experience here in the UK, so you can leave your brolly at home! Even during the rainy months, you can still expect blue skies and sunshine, with about an hour or two of rain each day in short, sharp bursts.
With the Indian Ocean just a heartbeat away, multi-centred safari and beach holidays are a popular choice. Kenya’s tropical coastline around Mombasa and the exotic island of Zanzibar are both excellent options for a beach stay following a safari in Kenya. Just a short flight transports you from safari heaven to dreamy beaches, with a range of accommodation from affordable hotels to world class luxury retreats. South Africa has a stunning coastline all of its own, or for somewhere a little different, country-hop over into neighbouring Mozambique and the hideaway island of Benguerra Island.
Waking before dawn in the heart of the bush with a full itinerary planned for the day ahead could not be more different from lazy mornings spent lounging on glistening sands; this is exactly why the adventure and relaxation combination works so well. Hot-air balloon flights at sunrise, The Big Five viewing, bush breakfasts, snorkeling in crystal clear waters, cocktails on the beach at sunset, falling asleep to the sound of the waves lapping the shore – this is a twin centre holiday that’s hard to beat.
